Description

Summary: 

The Fleet Mechanic contributes to an atmosphere of total quality customer service and strives to ensure that buses are in good condition prior to delivery or use by performing pre-delivery inspections, set up and maintenance.

Essential Functions:

  • Reviews VDR Board with Service Manager daily and performs assigned tasks.

  • Performs weekly fleet checks and completes regular maintenance and repairs on existing fleet vehicles  

  • Continuously learns new technical information and techniques in formal training sessions in order to stay abreast with rapidly changing automotive technology

  • Keeps management aware of mechanical repair problems as they occur.

  • Maintains a safe and organized service department. 

  • Requests and/or obtains necessary materials and parts in order to complete tasks efficiently

  • Obtains and completes A/B Service List for fleet vehicles. Demonstrates accuracy and attention to detail when recording work completed and defects found. Follows up with Service Manager for further direction.

  • Ability to support the transportation division by driving a daily school bus and complying with all school bus driver position description requirements.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Follows Nelson Bus Service, Inc. policies and procedures; upholds organizational values; exhibits respect and sensitivity for cultural differences; promotes a harassment-free work environment; demonstrates knowledge of EEO policy.

  • Observes safety and security procedures; reports unsafe conditions to management team.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Must provide basic hand tools required to effectively perform essential functions.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or abilities required.

Education/Experience

Must be currently enrolled in a technical program in an Automotive Technology related field or have a minimum of (1) year hands-on related work experience. Diesel truck or bus experience is preferred, but we will train if all other requirements are met.

Licenses, Registrations or Certifications

  • Must have a valid Wisconsin Drivers license.

  • Must obtain a Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License with School bus, Passenger and Air Brake endorsements.

Computer or Technology Skills

  • Must have PC skills including: Spreadsheet, database, Internet, Intranet and e-mail.

  • Ability to operate office equipment (copier, printers)

  • Ability inspect and maintain video and voice communication equipment

Mechanical Skills

  • General mechanical skills including the ability to operate basic hand tools, power tools and air tools; multi-meter, test light.

Math Ability

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply basic concepts of algebra and geometry.

Language Ability

  • Must be able to read and write and otherwise communicate in English at a level consistent with ability to perform the following job functions:
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret written information including procedure manuals, work orders, technical manuals, warranty claim sheets, parts books, catalogs, invoices, memos and reports.

  • Ability to professionally communicate verbally and in writing with customers, suppliers, co-workers and managers to answer inquiries, provide explanation and make requests

  • Regular hours of work and scheduled overtime are determined and approved by management based on the operating needs of the business.

  • Attendance/Punctuality - Is consistently at work and on time. Ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent; arrives at meetings and appointments on time.

  • Must be flexible to deal with work schedule changes due to unexpected events.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, talk, hear and smell. Regularly required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Occasionally required to sit. Frequently required to lift, push or pull up to 25 pounds; regularly up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds or more.

  • Specific vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

  • Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Frequently works with or near moving mechanical parts. Occasionally works in high places such as bus roofs or on a ladder.

  • Occasional exposure to diesel, paint or other fumes in ventilated areas.

  • Occasional vibration when using impact tools.

  • Noise level is usually loud. Use of personal protective equipment is required.
